Ms. Marvel

Boston Comic-Con 2017

One of my daughter’s heroes is Kamala Khan, a teenager from Jersey City who unwittingly becomes the superhero Ms. Marvel. She’s real, she’s funny, and she’s awesome.

What’s neat about this costume is that the character had to create it from things she had around the house, including a burkini (modest swimwear) and her grandmother’s wedding bangles. And her Converse All-Stars, because duh.

I started with a red bodysuit and blue skating dress, then cut out a spandex lightning bolt and painted a leather mask she had from a past Renaissance faire.

My daughter ended up meeting Ms. Marvel’s hero, Captain Marvel, as well as her doppelgänger. This was more than a year before the Captain Marvel movie was even announced, so it was just us comic nerds who knew about any of this…

Update: Boston Comic-Con 2019

Ms. Marvel is still a favorite, but the costume was way too small… so I remade it, saving the scarf and mask. The leggings from 2017 became the sleeves, and I found knee-high sneaker boots to go with the costume (alas, they were white, so I invested in a lot of fabric paint). I love how many people recognized her.
