Funko Poppy Li

My daughter really loves the Apple TV+ show Mythic Quest. For her birthday, I customized a Funko Pop figurine to look like Poppy Li, a volatile, brilliant and sardonic Australian game engineer played by Charlotte Nicdao—and one who greatly needs her own Funko Pop.

That day is not today, however, so I found three inexpensive Funkos that I could Frankenstein together to make Poppy: The Baroness from GI Joe for the glasses, Mulan for the head, and Claire Dearing from Jurassic Park for the body. After some brute-force plastic surgery to the donors, I assembled Poppy and turned Claire’s hiking boots into Converse All-Stars and her shirt into Poppy’s comfy cardigan.

What do you mean I don’t have a Funko Pop?!

I re-created the box art, found a perfect game-style background online from Nimarra, created a 2D image of the finished product, printed it on card stock and glued it to one of the boxes.

Paddington and the Corgis

When Queen Elizabeth died, this subject came to life fully formed in my head: Paddington Bear—who did a video with the Queen last summer—comforting her Corgis Muick and Sandy.

The very first time I played Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, I fell head over heels for this droid and decided I must have one. So I made one.

These creations are all shown in their own respective sections of the site, but I thought they needed to live on one page too - because Star Wars.

Cosplay

I create cosplay clothes, historical garb and the occasional wedding dress.

Needle Felting

Felting is absurdly fun, whether it’s creating owls and labyrinths or Porgs and droids.

Embroidery

I like to reproduce historical designs from the last thousand years and around the globe.

Painting

I like creating things based on books or pop culture (children’s books, Star Wars, superheroes, etc.), and reproducing historical designs.

Weaving

I’m learning the art of inkle weaving, which at this point mainly consists of ten-foot-long, one-inch-wide bands useful for medieval belts, straps and trim - and even more useful for helping me improve my technique before I get into more complex patterns.

Sculpting

I’ve sculpted costume props, reproduction artifacts, Christmas ornaments, a fairy wonderland and a labyrinth (of course).

Thetford Book

My book Thetford, part of Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series, chronicles the long and fascinating visual history of Thetford, Vermont.

She-Ra

Boston Comic-Con 2019 cosplay. The 2018 Netflix series stars a snarky, confident heroine with a cadre of funny, flawed friends and a campy costume that was fun to make.

Quidditch

Halloween 2018 costume. I got to make a broom, uniform and protective gear from scratch, and only burned myself with hot glue like a dozen times.

Shuri

Boston Comic-Con 2018 cosplay. How can you not love Shuri? She may be the smartest, funniest Disney princess yet and she definitely has the coolest tech (sorry, Leia). There was no question what that year’s cosplay was going to be.

Emily

Halloween 2017 costume. Emily is the main character from the Amulet book series by Kazu Kibuishi. She’s an epic hero with an incredible story.

Ms. Marvel

Boston Comic-Con 2017 cosplay. One of my daughter’s heroes is Kamala Khan, a teenager from Jersey City who unwittingly becomes the superhero Ms. Marvel. She’s real, she’s funny, and she’s awesome.

Rey

Halloween 2016 costume. I’m pretty sure I had more fun with this one than my daughter did. The Force Awakens had come out the previous December, and there was pretty much no question what was happening that Halloween. I got way into the details.

Endor Leia

Halloween 2015 costume. Leia is a badass, and she always has cool gear.

Merida

Halloween 2013 costume. I’m pretty proud that in a year when everyone else was Elsa, my daughter wanted to be Merida.
