Sculpting

With the exception of the first two items, I made everything out of Sculpey.

SOAPSTONE LABYRINTH

I realized there was one medium in which I had not yet made a labyrinth, so I did.

VEGVISIR, THE VIKING COMPASS

I took a stone carving class in college 25 years ago and kept my tools because I always hoped I could get back into it. I finally found a piece of soapstone and carved my husband a Vegvisir that’s about 4” across. Soapstone is awesome.

KIMOYO BRACELET (SHURI COSPLAY)

I made a bracelet of kimoyo beads out of Sculpey, and as I couldn’t find a description of the symbols on Shuri’s bracelet, I spelled out my daughter’s name in Wakandan instead.

AMULET (EMILY COSPLAY)

For the amulet, I combined regular pink and gold Sculpey with the glow-in-the-dark variety so it glowed some of the time though, alas, not on its own.

CIRCULAR PAGAN STUFF

WHEEL OF THE YEAR

I had fun with this one. Balanced by the sun and moon, I illustrated the eight Wiccan sabbats.

LABYRINTH

I really love labyrinths, and so does my mom, so every time I discover a new creative medium, she gets a labyrinth made in that material. Here’s my Sculpey finger labyrinth. It’s about 8 inches across, coated in pearlescent green acrylic paint and water-based varnish.

OTHER STUFF

FAIRY DOLLHOUSE

My daughter had a woodland fairy phase and I was hankering to make something. I took an old cookie sheet, covered it with stones and moss from the floral aisle at the craft store, and made birch trees and platforms from Sculpey. I then made furniture for her little fairy characters (although the mushroom at lower right is my mom’s doing, not mine).

SALLY BIRTHDAY CAKE

Yup, that's a big flat Sculpey dog on top of a birthday cake. My daughter wanted a Maine-themed birthday when she was little, and she also loved Stephen Huneck books. So I created a copy of the dog-shaped island from the book Sally Goes to the Beach in the woodcut style that Huneck’s books are known for. I then made Sally, the little black lab, added a beach towel and the (removable) red starfish that ends up on her nose, made a lighthouse to hold a candle, and added a boat (which was also a Christmas ornament) tied up next to the cake.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

My husband and I have played World of Warcraft for many years. One year, I made him these tiny ornaments for our kitchen tree. They’re icons you can find throughout the game.
