Quidditch

Halloween 2018

My daughter’s costume in 2018 was Quidditch Seeker.

I made the broom from a branch I found outside. The strap is belt webbing, and the brush is twigs from our apple trees. They were cut just before I made it, so the green wood was more resistant to snapping than dry twigs would be. It’s tied together with leather cording and yellow and red leftover linen wrappings from the uniform tunic. And so much hot glue and wire. So very much hot glue and wire.

The uniform was a freehand approximation from the movie. It has a handy pocket in the front and is laced together with leather thongs at the sides. As I’m not great at freehand drawing, I found a typeface I liked for the 7 (chosen because it’s her favorite number) and traced a paper cutout onto the fabric before steaming it onto interfacing to minimize fraying and to give it some body before cutting and sewing it. (Linen likes to move around a lot when you want it to stay put on tight corners.)

I liked the old-fashioned colors of the maroon and mustard linen. As you can see from the image of the back of the uniform, it got suitably muddy Halloween night.

Arm and knee pads were freehand guesses from movie pictures. I stuffed them with fabric scraps. She used riding chaps for her shin guards.

Goggles and patch were licensed Harry Potter gear.

The poor candy pumpkin got yet another makeover, this time as the Golden Snitch.
